Technical Losses

Technical losses in power system are caused by the physical properties of the components of the power system. The most obvious example is the power dissipated in transmission lines and transformers due to internal electrical resistance.
Technical losses are naturally occurring losses (caused by action internal to the power system) and consist mainly of power dissipation in electrical system component such as transmission lines, power transformers, measurement system, etc.Technical losses are possible to compute and control, provided the power system in question consists of known quantities of loads. Technical losses occur during transmission and distribution and involve substation, transformer, and line related losses.

Technical Losses

Technical losses can be classified as:

  1. Fixed technical losses
  2. Variable technical losses

Revenue loss due to technical losses can be calculated as,
CLoss = Cunits X ELoss+Cmaint

Where,

CLoss    is the revenue loss due to technical/ additional losses,
Cunits   represents the unit cost of electricity.
ELoss     represents the amounts of energy lost
Cmaint  represents the maintenance and additional operational costs.

Fixed technical losses

Contributing factors to these losses are,

  1. Leakage current
  2. Open circuit loss
  3. Dielectric loss
  4. Corona loss
  5. Losses due to connected measuring instruments.

Variable technical losses :

Contribution factors to these losses are,

  1. Joules losses
  2. Impendence losses
  3. Losses in current resistances.
